Q Introduction Immigrants and refugees face a number of challenges once they arrive in the US. Some of these include: Language Barriers Economic Insecurity Lack of Education Conflicting Cultural Values Inadequate Job Training/Skills Lack of Transportation Lack of Access to Health and Mental Health Care Lack of Social Support Tasks 1. Select one of the barriers above or identify your own. 2. Make a list of strengths that immigrants and refugee communities offer both one another and their social environments. 3. Design an intervention that could be implemented in your community to assist either refugees or immigrants. Make sure to address micro, mezzo and macro aspects of the intervention and include the strengths you identified. Be creative! At a minimum, your description should answer the following questions: • What major issue faced by new immigrants or refugees does your intervention address? • What are the strengths utilized? • What are the key features of your intervention? • What will you need to ensure a successful launch of the intervention? (Volunteers, equipment, $, etc.) • How will you measure whether the intervention is successful? (What is your evaluation plan?) 4. Provide feedback to at least two of your classmates using correct grammar and sentence structure. Responses must demonstrate insight and foster continued learning. Responses that are short and do not demonstrate effort, such as simply stating "Good idea. I agree," will not receive full points. Students are encouraged to reference the discussion board grading rubric prior to posting and responding.
